About the Doctor
Dr. Paul J. Helpard – Certified Specialist in Orthodontics
A native of Welland, Ontario, Dr. Helpard attended the University of Western Ontario, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. After completing his dental school training at McGill University, Dr. Helpard spent three years with the Canadian military. He then pursued orthodontic specialty training at the University of Iowa and has been serving patients in the Vancouver Island area since 1996. Dr. Helpard is also actively involved with the Cleft Palate team at B.C. Children’s Hospital. In 2006, Dr. Helpard was a member of the Operation Rainbow team, a cleft palate mission to the Philippines which treated children with cleft lips and palates.
Dr. Helpard is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, meaning he has completed national examinations to recognize him as a trained dentist in the specialty of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. He is a member of the Canadian and American Associations of Orthodontists, the British Columbia Society of Orthodontists, as well as the Canadian and British Columbia Dental Associations.
Outside the office, he likes to spend time with his wife, Christine, and their three children, Benjamin, Amelia and Sammy. The Helpard family enjoys participating in many community and athletic activities. Dr. Helpard and Christine are actively involved in supporting and volunteering with numerous organizations, including the Child Development Center and local sporting clubs.
Dr. Helpard sponsors the Tin Grin, which is an annual celebration for the local dental community. All funds raised during the event are distributed to local children's charities in the area. This event is in its eleventh year and has raised over $140,000 for local children’s charities. The Helpards' latest project is Lose the Training Wheels, which is an innovative program to help children with physical disabilities learn how to ride a bicycle.
