Orthognathic Surgery to Straighten Your Smile

Orthognathic surgery, also known as orthodontic surgery or corrective jaw surgery, is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to align the upper or lower jaw so that the teeth come together properly.

Braces and clear aligners effectively treat a broad range of tooth and bite misalignments, but when orthodontic issues arise from jaw positioning instead of teeth alignment, orthognathic surgery may also be required.

Orthognathic surgery not only helps to create a more symmetrical smile, but it can also significantly improve a patient's ability to breathe, chew and speak.

When performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatments like braces, orthognathic surgery can provide patients with a smile that functions correctly and looks great.

The Surgical Orthodontic Process

Surgical orthodontics happens as part of an overall orthodontic treatment plan, which can require two to three years to complete.

The orthodontist will see you for an exam and consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for surgical orthodontic treatment. The orthodontist will then refer you to an oral surgeon to further discuss the process of orthoganthic surgery. Together the orthodontist and surgeon will finalize your treatment plan. The orthodontist will offer you personalized care to help guide your teeth into their best positions before surgery.

Approximately midway through orthodontic treatment, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs a procedure to move your jaws into the desired position. Once your jaw has healed, orthodontic treatment will continue to fine-tune the alignment of your teeth and bite, resulting in a smile that is healthier and more symmetrical.

Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics combines braces treatment by our orthodontists with essential corrective jaw surgery to effectively align both the upper and lower jaws.

These treatments can tackle various orthodontic and overall health issues, such as traumatic injuries, improper jaw development, or even obstructive sleep apnea.
